The Sacrament of Marriage
The Sacrament of Marriage is a covenant, which is more than a contract. Covenant always expresses a relationship between persons. The marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God.
Requirements for this Sacrament
- Must be at least 18
- Not related to each other by blood (first cousin or closer).
- Both intend to enter a permanent, indissoluble marriage, and to be faithful to each other for life.
- Both intend to enter a marriage that is open to the procreation and raising of children.
- One of the two is a Catholic.

The Catholic Church believes that marriages are for life. However, our church realizes that there are circumstances beyond one’s control, which may lead to divorce. As such we believe in the sanctity of marriage; and we believe that Jesus is merciful and those who have been divorced and/or remarried are offered the sacraments of the Church
If your partner is baptized Christian, then this is permitted. However, if your partner is not baptized at all then a dispensation is required. Your partner must accept the obligation to persevere in the faith and to assure the baptism and Catholic education of their children.
It is preferred, but it is not required. It should be noted that there should be an intent to receive this sacrament shortly afterwards.
